The Landat Every Hour

A small farm stay near Sarjapura, on the edge of Bengaluru. The house is built inside a stone water tank that stood here for eighty years, roofed now in Mangalore tiles. One bedroom, a pond the birds come to, and a pool.

Walk before you come

Stand inside the water tank and look up

Drag to turn. Follow the arrows from the pond to the house, in under the tiles, and out to the pool. It is a small place and this is most of it, before you pack a bag.

Things to do

Things to do while the day goes

  • Stand inside the tank

Step inside walls that held water for eighty years, and look up. Only the Mangalore-tile roof is new; the stone is the stone that was always here.

  • Wait at the pond for the birds

The pond was dug, not found, and the birds have decided it is theirs. Come to it early: the first hour of the day is the one they do the talking in.

  • Walk the orchard

Take the slow loop through the trees: apple and mango, amla, banana and custard apple, and more besides. Whatever is ripe the week you visit is the shortest trip a fruit ever makes to a plate.

The rhythm of the year

The land at every hour, and every season

  1. DAWNಮುಂಜಾನೆ

    The birds get here first

There is a pond on the land, made rather than found, and the birds come to it. The listing promises birdsong and that is a promise about the first hour of the day.

  2. MONSOONಮಳೆಗಾಲ

The tank remembers its old job

When the rains come the pond fills to its brim and the land goes a green it spends the rest of the year saving up for. The stone walls stream and darken, and guests who come in the rain tend to come back in it.

  3. HARVESTಸುಗ್ಗಿ

    What the garden gives

This is a very small farm and it grows like one: a kitchen garden and fruit trees, mango and banana, amla, custard apple, even apple. What is ripe when you visit ends up on the table, which is the whole distance from field to plate here.

  4. DUSKಸಂಜೆ

    How the night falls

You build a fire when the light starts to go, and the night comes down around it: the sky empties, the pool sits a few steps from the door, and the farm goes quiet. The evening takes care of itself.
