Eighty years of stone

A house inside the tank that used to hold the water

The walls came first, and they were not built for this. A stone tank held water here for eighty years. What stands in it now is a one bedroom house under Mangalore tiles, small enough that the tank still reads as a tank from outside.

The tank was built to water the fields around it, back when Sarjapura was farmland all the way to the horizon. When borewells and pipes made it redundant it stood empty for years, too well built to fall down and too odd to use, until somebody looked at the stone walls and saw a house waiting inside them. The roof went on in 2023, the bedroom went in, and the tank got a third life holding people instead of water.

It is run by the family that farms the land around it, who kept the place small on purpose: one house in the tank, one on the rise behind it, and no plans for a third. What they want a guest to leave with is simple: a slower pulse, and the suspicion that an eighty year old water tank is a better bedroom than most bedrooms.

What this place is built on

The rhythm of the year

The rhythm of the year

  1. DAWNಮುಂಜಾನೆ

    The birds get here first

There is a pond on the land, made rather than found, and the birds come to it. The listing promises birdsong and that is a promise about the first hour of the day.

  2. MONSOONಮಳೆಗಾಲ

The tank remembers its old job

When the rains come the pond fills to its brim and the land goes a green it spends the rest of the year saving up for. The stone walls stream and darken, and guests who come in the rain tend to come back in it.

  3. HARVESTಸುಗ್ಗಿ

    What the garden gives

This is a very small farm and it grows like one: a kitchen garden and fruit trees, mango and banana, amla, custard apple, even apple. What is ripe when you visit ends up on the table, which is the whole distance from field to plate here.

  4. DUSKಸಂಜೆ

    How the night falls

You build a fire when the light starts to go, and the night comes down around it: the sky empties, the pool sits a few steps from the door, and the farm goes quiet. The evening takes care of itself.

The light is moving through the day on its own. Choose an hour to hold it there.
